YOU DO YOU
- August 01, 2017
I don’t know if you have ever had to deal with a random stranger or someone close to you, tell you to act like a person of your gender SHOULD. If you have, this one is for you. This is for the girl who has been told to “sit like a girl” or “dress like a girl” or “walk like a girl” or “to wear a little makeup” or “not wear so much makeup”. This is for every guy who has been made fun of for liking pink or liking romcoms or even just crossing their legs. The world is a harsh and sucky place so please listen to me when I say “YOU DO YOU”.
Be the girl who wears whatever the hell she wants. Be the girl who fights back. Be the girl who wears leather and denim and plays video games. Be the girl who wears makeup to the supermarket. Be the girl who hasn’t shaved in MONTHS, maybe years.
Be the guy who enjoys a good romcom. Be the guy who enjoys getting regular manis and pedis. Be the guy who enjoys sports. Be the guy who doesn’t. Wear pink. Wear blue. Wear the most sparkly shirt you can get your hands on.
Screw the rules that tell you that you’re any less of a person because of the things you like and the things you wear. How you sit and how you walk does not determine the person you are. It’s the way you treat other people.
Ignore the person who tells you to be less of who YOU are. Especially if they say something like “I’m just trying to protect your image” or “I don’t think this way, it’s other people who say this about you”. Trust me. You’re better off without them.
I’ve talked about loving your body in almost every single article I’ve written so far. This time I’m asking you to love who you are. Love the things that make you different. Love the things that make you like “every other girl” or “every other guy”. Nobody gets to demand you change who you are. Not even the person you love the most in the world.
Love yourself. Love every part of you. And encourage others to love themselves. Don’t drag others down. Empower. Encourage. And every time someone tells you to that you’re not good enough, flip them off and ride into the sunset being the fabulous unicorn that you are.
Be the person you want to be. Dress how you want, sit how you want, walk how your want, talk how you want. In a world where everyone is so busy tearing others down, rise above it. You do you, my friend. You do you.
